What Can You Drive With an HR Licence?

A Heavy Rigid licence lets you drive:

• Any vehicle covered by a lower licence class
• A rigid motor vehicle (not an articulated or special purpose vehicle) with three or more axles and a GVM over 8 tonne
• The above towing a single trailer (other than a semi-trailer) with a GVM up to 9 tonne, within the combination mass limits under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (SA)
• An articulated bus with three or more axles and a GVM over 8 tonne
• A special purpose vehicle with three or more axles and a GVM over 15 tonne

You may also tow any farm implement, or any trailer with a GVM up to 9 tonne provided it stays within the towing vehicle's GCM.

Who Is Eligible? (Requirements)

• Minimum age of 19 years
• Held a current car (Class C) licence for at least 2 years, OR an LR/MR licence for at least 12 months
• Hold a current and valid SA driver's licence
• Overseas licence holders must provide evidence if an SA licence has been held for less than 2 years

How the HR Training Process Works

What is competency-based training (CBT)?

• You're issued a logbook at the start of your training
• We put you through the CBT course as directed by the South Australian Government
• A training guide structures the course around your individual needs and experience
• Assessments are conducted in steps until you reach the government standard for HR licensing
• Your instructor awards a certificate of competency on completion

How long does an HR licence course take?

Average logbook course times are:

• Automatic / Synchromesh: 1 day
• Road Ranger: 2 days

Actual time varies with the ability and prior experience of each student.

Where do I start?

• Call our office and book with one of our friendly staff
• We'll assess your current driving experience and tailor the course to your needs
• Once you've reached the required standard, take your certificate of competency and current driver's licence to a Service SA branch to apply for your HR licence

What to Bring on Training Day

• Your current South Australian driver's licence
• Appropriate footwear — work boots or enclosed shoes (no open footwear)
• Arrive at least 15 minutes before each lesson
• All vehicles are supplied by Adelaide Truck Training Centre

Booking, Payment & Cancellation

Office hours

• Monday to Friday: 8:30am – 4:00pm (excluding public holidays)
• Assessments available 7 days a week by appointment

Cancellation policy

• Cancelling with less than 3 days (72 hours) clear notice during office hours will result in the deposit being retained
• With more than 72 hours' notice, the deposit is refunded less administration and booking fees
• Late fees may apply
